Understanding Your First NDIS Plan
Getting your first NDIS plan can feel overwhelming — there's new terminology, funding categories, and decisions to make about who delivers your supports.
Your plan is generally split into three funding categories: Core Supports (day-to-day assistance), Capacity Building (developing skills and independence), and Capital Supports (equipment and home modifications). Not every plan includes all three, and how flexibly you can move funding between categories depends on whether it's NDIA-managed, plan-managed, or self-managed.
The first step is understanding what's actually funded in your plan and why. Your planner or Local Area Coordinator should be able to walk you through this, but a support coordinator can also help translate your plan into an actual weekly schedule of supports.
From there, it's about finding providers you trust. You're not locked into anyone — you can change support workers or providers at any time if the fit isn't right. Start with a short trial period if you're unsure, and keep notes on what's working and what isn't ahead of your plan review.
