Supporting a Family Member on the NDIS

Families play a huge role in NDIS journeys, but there's a balance between supporting someone and speaking over them. Where possible, let the participant lead decisions about their own supports, even if it takes longer or looks different from what you'd choose. Independence is often built through the chance to make choices — including ones that don't go perfectly. That said, your observations matter. You often notice changes in mood, health, or engagement before anyone else does, and that information is genuinely useful to share with support coordinators and providers. Don't forget support for yourself, too. Carer respite through Short Term Accommodation, or simply regular check-ins with your loved one's support team, can make a long-term difference to how sustainable your caring role feels.
